This bottle contained licorice powder (Réglisse Pulv.).
Highly prized at the time, it was used for its soothing properties for the throat and cough, but was also used to mask the bitter taste of certain other medicines in compounded preparations made by the pharmacist.
It comes from an antique cellar-laboratory of a 19th-century Parisian pharmacy. The bottles had not been moved from the shelves since the late 1950s!
It is mouth-blown glass, as evidenced by the pontil mark under the base, a sign of traditional craftsmanship.
It has a beautiful cobalt blue color, dyed throughout.
This large-capacity bottle was a reserve bottle intended for storage.
Its small neck meant that it was used to preserve precious liquids, mother tinctures, essential oils or powder. Its cobalt color ensured the stability of photosensitive preparations. The deep blue served to protect these components from UV light.
Original black, red, and gold label. The original protective glass covering the label is missing.
Dimensions: Height 28cm - Diameter: 10.5 cm - Weight: average 780g!
Condition: In its original laboratory condition with its original metal cap, which is more or less oxidized and sometimes has historical residues of dry substances.
Blue glass jars were used for dangerous, toxic products, poisons, or to protect certain substances from UV rays. Pharmacists could identify them at a glance to avoid mistakes.
