Very Large cobalt blue glass pharmacy bottle - Apothecary - Shouldered - H27.5cm - 19th century
Shouldered apothecary bottle - Antique pharmacy bottle
It comes from an antique cellar-laboratory of a 19th-century Parisian pharmacy. The bottles had not been moved from the shelves since the late 1950s!
It is mouth-blown glass, as evidenced by the pontil mark under the base, a sign of traditional craftsmanship.
It has a beautiful cobalt blue color, dyed throughout.
This large-capacity bottle was a reserve bottle intended for storage.
Its small neck meant that it was used to preserve precious liquids, mother tinctures, or essential oils. Its cobalt color ensured the stability of photosensitive preparations. The deep blue served to protect these components from UV light.
There are no labels left, as the jars have changed purpose several times and the original labels had been removed when I found them. Originally, they had black and gold paper labels under glass stuck inside the depression on the front.
Dimensions: Height 30 cm - Diameter: 11 cm - Weight: average 1.1g!
Condition: In its original laboratory condition with its original metal cap, which is more or less oxidized and sometimes has historical residues of dry substances.
Blue glass jars were used for dangerous, toxic products, poisons, or to protect certain substances from UV rays. Pharmacists could identify them at a glance to avoid mistakes.
They are all different, with traces of labels and metal lids that are more or less oxidized.
