Antique glass oil lamp in pressed molded glass - Provence
19th century, circa 1880/1890
Superb glass oil lamp or reading lamp in pressed molded glass, dating from the late 19th century (circa 1880-1890) in Provence.
This piece is distinguished by its imposing quadrangular pedestal featuring rich iconographic decoration, typical of the Eclectic and Neo-Renaissance styles under the Third Republic.
The base has four sides richly worked in relief with decorations of satyr mascarons, ram's heads, and bouquets of flowers
- A satyr or Pan mascarons, featuring the bearded face of a sylvan deity, symbolizing nature and ancient mythology.
- A goat or ram's head, an animal figure with curled horns, classic attributes associated with abundance.
- Two bouquets of flowers
The shaft, the central part, is decorated with a diamond-point pattern. This technique captures and diffracts the light from the flame to create a sparkling effect.
The reservoir is a smooth spherical globe (known as a “bubble”) surmounting an intermediate cup designed to collect oil droplets.
Manufacture: Although unmarked (common practice before 1920), the style and motifs are characteristic of the catalogs of Verreries Réunies de Vallérysthal and Portieux.
