Wick night light
A box of oil-filled night lights made of bent spruce wood slats, dating from the second half of the 19th century (circa 1860–1880).
Step into the intimacy of 19th-century Parisian bedrooms with this authentic nightlight set. Manufactured by the T.L. company in Paris, this oval-shaped cardboard box contains the essential accessories for nighttime lighting before the age of electricity.
The nightlight was an ingenious and economical system: the wick floated on a thin layer of oil.
A single small wick provided a soft, soothing glow for about 10 hours—ideal for keeping watch over a sick person or comforting a child.
Manufactured by the Parisian firm T.L., this oval box from the Napoleon III era is distinguished by its lid, adorned with a superb lithographed engraving featuring an allegorical motif depicting a winged figure in the clouds, holding a lit nightlight.
The label features multilingual inscriptions at all four corners (French, English, German, and Spanish), attesting to the renown and export of Parisian goods throughout Europe during the Second Empire.
The interior retains a significant number of its original components: natural cork floats, scalloped and covered with antique cut-out paper featuring geometric, floral, tartan, or colorful patterns.
Their wicks are attached to thin wooden sticks designed to float on the surface of the vegetable oil bath.
A charming, popular item steeped in history.
