Chloroform-Based Soothing Balm
Antique pharmacy bottle.
A molded amber glass pharmacy bottle still containing its original preparation, with a sealed cork stopper—on which a small amount of red wax remains—and a period label.
Pharmacist G. André, a graduate of the École Supérieure de Pharmacie de Paris, packaged his recipe for Chloroform-Infused Calming Balm in this bottle.
“Baume tranquille” is a preparation made from sedative plants (henbane, belladonna, stramonium) macerated in oil. The addition of chloroform was intended to enhance the analgesic effect when applied to the skin to relieve muscular or nervous pain.
The body of the bottle bears the embossed inscription “AXARINE TERRAL / PARIS,” indicating that a pharmacist in the Orne department reused a bottle originally intended for a Parisian specialty—a common practice at the time of reusing bottles from other specialty preparations.
Provenance: Pharmacie Nouvelle (G. André, Pharmacist), Le Mesle-sur-Sarthe (Orne).
Period: Circa 1900 / Early 20th century.
Materials: Molded amber glass with raised inscriptions, original paper label, cork stopper, and red sealing wax.
Label inscriptions: “Baume tranquille Chloroformé” (handwritten in pen), cartouche reading “EXTERNAL USE ONLY.”
Bottle height: 12.8 cm
Collectible and historical curiosity. Due to the age of the contents and the presence of chloroform, the bottle must not be opened or used.
