Large Napoleon III Beveled Glass and Brass Wedding Box - Reliquary box
A superb and rare large wedding display box from the Napoleon III era, dating to the second half of the 19th century.
It features transparent beveled glass panels, an ornate hand-worked brass frame (also referred to as an ornemaniste mount), and a magnificent original crimson velvet cushion buttoned with brass flowers.
The tufting is held in tension by stylized flower-shaped buttons in stamped, guilloché brass, topped with a domed nail head forming the pistil at the center of each metallic petal.
Considerably larger than traditional wedding ring boxes (baguiers), I have placed it next to a small reliquary ring box in the photos so you can appreciate the difference in scale.
This ceremonial display box rests on four curved rocaille feet. The front panel features a prominent leafy shell motif in gilded brass.
History & Original Purpose
In 19th-century in France, this type of large glass casket was given as a wedding gift to hold and preserve the bride's orange blossom crown (made of wax, fabric, or porcelain) away from dust. Displayed in the marital bedroom, it served as a secular reliquary to keep the memory of the wedding day alive.
Thanks to its generous height under the lid (14.5 cm), this glass box is ideal today for staging a cabinet of curiosities.
It makes a lovely display case for osteological specimens, as shown here in the photos with a fox skull and a beaver skull, or for mineral collections, antique jewelry, and other precious (or curious) objects.
A truly rare size to find, and in very good condition with no cracks or scratches. The red velvet tufting is remarkably well-preserved, complete with all its original anchor flower buttons.
