Trumpet Vase Mount in brass - James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield - Victorian Period - Circa 1860
This brass piece is a trumpet vase holder from the renowned James Dixon & Sons workshops in Sheffield, England.
It was originally designed to hold a crystal or glass flute, but it can be repurposed as a candleholder by inserting a long candle.
Period: Victorian Naturalist and Rustic styles.
We are in the midst of the Victorian Naturalist period (1850–1870).
This movement sought to capture nature in its most organic and wild form. The base perfectly illustrates the Rustic style, a speciality of Sheffield.
The brass on the base is worked here to faithfully imitate the bark of vine stocks. A beautiful piece of faux-woodwork that contrasts with the delicacy of the chiselled vine leaves.
Underneath the base, the piece bears the historic hallmark of James Dixon & Sons. The iconic bugle can be clearly seen. This hallmark, officially registered in Sheffield, is a guarantee of manufacture by one of the most renowned workshops of the British industrial era.
