Crin de Florence - Suture thread - Catgut
Natural suture thread for surgery or drainage obtained from the caterpillar of the Bombyx mori butterfly.
Crin de Florence was obtained by stretching the sericogenic apparatus of the Bombyx mori butterfly caterpillar, which was first killed by soaking it in vinegar.
This thread was also used for fishing line, to which the hook is attached.
(Source Dr Paul Dorveaux: Historique du Crin de Florence - 1909)
Natural Crin de Florence began to be replaced by synthetic thread after the Second World War, mainly due to the degeneration of silkworms, which no longer produced the coarse threads preferred by surgeons.
