Description

Louis-Philippe period hanging table lamp

Period: July Monarchy around 1835-1845, still in transition from Rococo to the previous Restoration period

Material: Bronze with medal patina and cobalt blue blown glass.

This rare bedside lamp embodies the bourgeois elegance of the mid-19th century. It is distinguished by a bold mix of styles, characteristic of the transition period under King of The French Louis-Philippe:

The base: An imposing tripod with palmettes inspired by the previous Empire and Restoration periods, decorated with chiseled palmettes and resting on three lion's paw feet.

The Arm: A dynamic volute illustrating the renewed interest in the Rocaille style under the July Monarchy. Its energetic curve lightly suspends the light holder.

The glassware: The removable cup is original, made of cobalt blue glass.. Designed to hold oil and a floating wick, it gives off a soothing glow, perfect for the intimacy of period bedrooms.

The original glass, preserved with its suspension system, is a precious detail, as many have disappeared over time.

Workshop Assembly: The base reveals a complex assembly of added pieces, secured with period iron screws that are stamped rather than machined.

Adjustment Markings: Under the palmettes, there are marks stamped with a punch, hand-made by the bronze craftsman to identify each piece during final assembly.

Stability: The base retains its original plaster ballast, a traditional technique used to counterbalance the weight of the offset arm.

Signs of Life: A discreet old weld on the basket mount bears witness to the daily handling and actual use of the object over the decades, giving it an authentic historical patina.

Perfect in a cabinet of curiosities, near a crystal bowl or antique leather books, it returns to its original purpose: to gently illuminate the strange, reveal the contours of a rare object, and make the material vibrate in an almost alchemical light.

A discreet witness to 19th-century life, between nocturnal poetry and a taste for the unusual.

19th century, circa 1835-1845
