Description
Cobalt blue glass pharmacy jar - Apothecary - Wide neck - 19th
Wide-mouth apothecary jar. Antique pharmacy bottle
It comes from an antique cellar-laboratory of a 19th-century Parisian pharmacy. The jars had not been moved from the shelves since the late 1950s!
It is mouth-blown glass, as there is a pontil mark under the base, evidence of its ancient craftsmanship.
The glass has a beautiful cobalt blue color, tinted throughout.
This large jar was a storage jar used to store powders, plants, or mineral salts. The deep blue color was used to protect these components from UV light.
There are no labels left, as the jars have changed purpose several times and the original labels had been removed when I found them. Originally, they were black and gold paper labels under glass, stuck inside the depression on the front.
Dimensions: Height 26 cm - Diameter: 11.5 cm - Weight: average 900g
Condition: In its original laboratory condition with its original metal cap, which is more or less oxidized and sometimes has historical residues of dry substances.
Blue glass jars were used for dangerous, toxic products, poisons, or to protect certain substances from UV rays. Pharmacists could identify them at a glance to avoid mistakes.
They are all different, with traces of labels and metal lids that are more or less oxidized.
