Original heraldic engraving on copper (1722) in colour - A System of Heraldry - By Alexander Nisbet
Family coat of arms: Montgomerie of Coilsfield
This heraldic engraving on copper from 1722 comes from the first volume of Alexander Nisbet’s A System of Heraldry, Speculative and Practical: with the True Art of Blazon (Edinburgh, page 531).
The illustration is signed by the Édimbourgeois engraver Robert Mylne.
The vignette was cut from an original folio sheet and then hand-enhanced with a subtle watercolor painting.
The proof is presented in a modern matting. The opening window measures 7.7 × 5.7 cm and the support box 16 × 14 cm.
Coat of arms & motto: Quartered azure with three golden fleur-de-lys and gules with three golden ringlets, with a crescent of gold. Motto: GARDE BIEN (in French in the text).
In the crest there is a female allegorical figure brandishing a sword with the right hand and holding the head of a man cut by the hair of the left hand. This striking motif refers to the biblical account of Judith and Holofernes, embodying vigilance and victory over tyranny, in perfect harmony with the motto Keep well.
History: A cadet branch of the Earls of Eglinton, descended from the high nobility of Norman origin established in Scotland in the 12th century. The motto written in French bears witness to these origins preserved over the centuries.
