This heraldic engraving on copper from 1722 comes from the first volume of Alexander Nisbet’s A System of Heraldry, Speculative and Practical: with the True Art of Blazon (Edinburgh, page 531).
The illustration is signed by the Édimbourgeois engraver Robert Mylne.
The vignette was cut from an original folio sheet and then hand-enhanced with a subtle watercolor painting.
The proof is presented in a modern matting. The opening window measures 7.7 × 5.7 cm and the support box 16 × 14 cm.
Coat of arms & motto: From sinople to lion rampant d'or, armed and past gules, with a serrated silver border. Motto: GOD WITH MY RIGHT. In the crest, a dexterous hand brandishing an erect sword. This is the traditional symbol of the clan’s right to justice and military valor.
History: Attached to the powerful Buchanan clan established on the banks of Loch Lomond, the branch of Drumakill has produced several scholars and military figures of note, including George Buchanan, preceptor of King James VI of Scotland.
