Le Buffon Pittoresque de la Jeunesse ou Tableaux Instructifs et Amusants de l'Histoire des Animaux
Publisher's polychrome cloth binding (1885/1895) with its original 1900 prize certificate
Author: After Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon
Publisher: Paris, Librairie de Théodore Lefèvre & Émile Guérin (Rue des Poitevins)
Period: Circa 1885–1895 (Late 19th century)
Dimensions: Duodecimo (In-12) - 18.5x11 cm - 248 pages
A late 19th-century scientific and educational publication, this work offers young readers an engaging immersion into zoology and the animal kingdom.
Inspired by the works of the Comte de Buffon, founder of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, the text combines anatomical descriptions, ethological observations, and more dramatic adventure tales.
This copy stands out for its beautiful publisher's polychrome cloth binding, characteristic of the fine craftsmanship of the Théodore Lefèvre & Émile Guérin publishing house. The front cover is richly decorated with a large botanical design highlighted in green, blue, and gold tones on red cloth, enclosing a stamped shield cartouche. The decorated spine features the title in several compartments, while the lower cover bears the blind-stamped "EG" monogram (Émile Guérin) at its center.
A touching archival document: This copy has preserved its original manuscript prize certificate awarded on August 9, 1900, to the student Louis Quesnel (1st Prize in Spelling and Penmanship, 2nd Prize in General Ranking and History-Geography). This sheet confirms the prestige associated with this type of pictorial publisher's binding during formal year-end prize distributions.
Numerous full-page plates: Scenes of combats, hunting, and expeditions, including "Tiger Hunt among the Hindoos", "Gorilla Attacked by Sailors", "Brazilian Native Attacking a Jaguar", "Combat between Tiger and Crocodile", and "Gérard Hunting Lions". Also features numerous in-text vignettes.
Prize sheet: Period paper dated August 9, 1900, preserved in its original condition.
