1937 Codex – French Pharmacopoeia
Published under the supervision of the Codex Commission by Imprimeries Oberthur in Rennes
Volume I only – Publisher’s hardback in full grey cloth.
6th Edition – Decree of 21 February 1937
Medallion embossed in black on the front cover (Ministry of National Education).
The flyleaf features a superb official engraved vignette of the ‘French Pharmacopoeia / RF (French Republic)’ dated 1937.
It depicts the traditional serpent of Asclepius coiled around a palm tree, amidst wild medicinal flora.
The text beneath the vignette is crucial: “Any copy not bearing the numbered label shall be deemed a counterfeit.” As the Codex had the force of law for the preparation of medicines, the State strictly controlled its distribution to authorised pharmacies and laboratories alone to prevent fraud.
Volume I: XXVIII + 623 pages
In good condition apart from the spine, which shows slight wear and tears at the top, as well as an old water stain or handling mark on the top cover, which is very common for a laboratory book.
The interior is in excellent condition; the paper is free from pinholes, and the inks (particularly the bright red of the label plates) have retained all their original vibrancy.
Dimensions: In-8 volumes: 24.5x16cm - Weight: 1.4Kg
