Antque Betel lime powder box
The box contained lime (powdered burnt shells), an essential ingredient in the betel nut preparation which, when chewed, acts as a stimulant, much like caffeine or nicotine.
The most common method involves cutting the betel nut into thin strips and rolling them in a betel leaf with the slaked lime contained in this box.
Most likely from the Atoni people
Period: Circa 1900 (Late 19th – Early 20th century) – 1880/1920
Material: Made from buffalo bone that has been hollowed out and polished, displaying a beautiful patina that bears witness to prolonged ritual and social use. The base of the object is sealed with mastic, a traditional mixture of plant resins and local waxes that ensured the watertightness essential for transporting the lime.
Height: 18.5cm
Engravings incised across the entire surface of the box.
Please note that the lid that sealed the box is missing.
Presented on a custom minimalist base made of blackened metal, the display is fully reversible, preserving the integrity of the original piece as it can be easily removed from its mount.
