Description

Bronze Dragon Hand Candle Holder – Troubadour Style from the Napoleon III Era

Immerse yourself in the fantastical world of the 19th century with this solid bronze thumb candlestick, also known as a cellar rat. A true curiosity, it takes the form of a dragon with a sinewy, muscular body, whose tail curls around to form an ergonomic handle.

The most spectacular feature is the dragon's head, raised towards the sky, its mouth wide open, spewing a jet of sculpted flames that supports and carries the binet (candle holder).

The troubadour style dates back to the reign of Napoleon III, when France was fascinated by its medieval and Renaissance past.

This movement, known as the “Troubadour Style,” reintroduced a fantastical bestiary into the decorative arts.

The dragon, depicted here as the very source of fire, is a motif of choice for cabinet objects, combining the strength of the beast with the utilitarian function of the light fixture.

Length: 12.5cm - Height: 11cm - Weight: 500g

Presence of two attachment points under the base, suggesting that it was meant to be attached to something.
