Description

Antique "Magasin de Nouveautés" Store Stamp

The raised rubber die reads: "NOUVEAUTÉS BLANC - GAUTHIER".

Now obsolete, a "magasin de nouveautés" was the French equivalent of a 19th-century drapery and haberdashery store or dry goods store—the precursors to modern department stores.

Before the advent of modern ready-to-wear clothing, people went there to buy fabrics by the meter (silks, cottons), haberdashery (ribbons, laces, trimmings, buttons), and various fashion and dress accessories.
