The Pharmacist’s Inking Pot

Moulded glass safety inking pot - Late 19th century.

Safety inking pot, known as an ‘anti-tip’ model, made of moulded white glass, dating from the late 19th century or the very early 20th century.

This professional model, characterised by particularly thick walls ensuring great stability, comes from a former pharmacy.

The internal structure is based on a central inverted funnel-shaped shaft. This technical design limits air intake to prevent the ink from evaporating, whilst retaining the liquid within the peripheral reservoir in the event of accidental tilting.

The glass features air bubbles trapped within the mass and visible mould lines on the sides, evidence of its period manufacturing method. The base bears a rough demoulding mark.

Period: Circa 1890–1910

Height: 3.5 cm – Diameter: 5 cm

It comes from the former cellar-laboratory of a Parisian pharmacy. The bottles had not been moved from the shelves since the late 1950s. The cellar had served as a medical analysis laboratory and a laboratory for the pharmacy’s compounded preparations from 1900 until around 1950.
