Description

Carved swordfish rostrum: Unique piece

Skulls motifs

The swordfish (from the Latin Gladius) owes its name to the appearance of its rostrum (or beak), similar to a sword blade, and its ability to cut through the water with ease and speed. Swordfish rostrums are traditionally used to make weapons in New Guinea, for example.

This one is superbly carved in depth. The motifs appear in relief.

Provenance: Papuan craftsmanship

Notches appear on each side of the rostrum along the wire, due to the way the craftsmen work, which is to fasten the rostrum to a flat surface with a fastener in order to engrave it deeply.

Height with base: 93cm

Wooden base: 13x7.5cm
