Large Longhorn cowfish on wooden base
Lactoria cornuta - Horned boxfish
The species is found throughout much of the Indo-Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea.
They belong to the so-called boxfish family (Ostracion) because they have an angular ossified shell surrounding the head and body. This family of fish is known to have an epidermis covered with a toxic mucus that deters predators. This toxin can be released under stress.
The carapace, once dried out, retains its shape.
Presented in the naturalist style of the 19th century on a wooden base.
