Description

Antique swivel vanity mirror - 19th-century - Art Nouveau mirror - 1900

Art Nouveau swivel vanity mirror or table mirror, dating from the late 19th century or very early 20th century (circa 1890–1910).

This type of accent mirror held a central place on women’s dressing tables and vanity tables during the Belle Époque.

At a time when women’s hygiene and beauty rituals were becoming increasingly refined, these movable and adjustable mirrors allowed the angle of the glass to be adjusted for applying makeup, facial care, or styling the elaborate hairstyles of the era.

Mass-produced by Parisian and French foundries using spelter, a metal less expensive than bronze or brass, this toiletries item was widespread in both bourgeois and working-class homes in the early 20th century.

The frame features a botanical design with soft lines and organic shapes, characteristic of the Art Nouveau movement.

Inspired by the forms of nature, this style emphasizes elongated volutes, the movement of stems, and stylized foliage motifs on a multi-lobed, openwork base.

The original circular mirror, beveled around its edge, is set in a swiveling frame mounted on two lateral pivots equipped with their original clamping screws. The back of the mirror is covered with the original cardboard backing.

Beneath the base is the mark “DÉPOSÉ” cast into the metal, attesting to the design’s registration and industrial protection in France during the Third Republic. The structural assembly is secured by a through-threaded rod and a square iron nut beneath the base.
