Swivel table-top mirror in solid brass with putti and rocaille decoration
Late 19th century – The charm and elegance of the Belle Époque period
This swivel mirror, known as a ‘psyché’, is crafted from solid brass.
It bears witness to the exuberant taste for the Rocaille style at the end of the 19th century. Its generous proportions and lavish decoration make it a piece of character, ideal for a boudoir or a dressing table with a distinctive décor.
The whole rests on a wide base adorned with latticework and acanthus leaves. The movable frame is crowned by an imposing scallop shell and enlivened by figures of putti (cherubs) nestled within the scrolls. The ‘rich’ appearance of the cast iron, typical of traditional sand-casting, gives it an authentic presence and a deep patina that time has beautifully refined.
