ANTE-CIBUM pills
Antique pharmacy bottle - Apothecary of Laboratoires Darrasse Frères in Paris
Early 20th century
Ante-cibum pills were made from aloe, cinchona bark, and mastic. They were known for their tonic, digestive, and purgative properties.
They were also called stomach pills, gourmet pills, or grains of life, the different names given to them coming from their ability to stimulate the appetite.
At the time, pills were medicines in the form of small spherical masses, intended to be swallowed without chewing.
These pills were nicknamed ante cibum because they were taken immediately before a meal.
