In 1548, Mattioli gave the doses to be used according to the desired effect. "To make a woman a little frisky, thinking she is the most beautiful in the world, you must make her drink a drachma of belladonna. If you want to make her crazier, you will need to give her two drachmas. But if you want her to remain crazy for the rest of her life, you should give her three drachmas and no more; for if you gave her four, you would kill her" (Commentaries on Dioscorides).
