Accident on the blade

Description

19th century amputation saw

Metal, brass and ebony handle. The blade is interchangeable.

No maker's markings

It dates from the 19th century, as the handle is made of ebony wood with a guilloche pattern for a better grip, and was no longer made in the 20th century. Knifemakers switched to all-metal or all-stainless steel equipment after the discovery of the importance of hygiene and sterilisation, as wood is a veritable hotbed of germs and bacteria of all kinds...

It was around the 1880s, when asepsis became essential thanks to Pasteur, that manufacturers completely abandoned ebony in surgical instruments.
