Chrome-plated metal wrench with interchangeable screw hook
An instrument for extracting molars by torsion-traction, often used for its ease by dentists, but much decried in the 19th century for the havoc it could wreak by pulling out pieces of gum, fractured teeth etc...
The tooth trapped between a hook and a bit could not withstand the twisting movement of the operator, similar to that made when opening a lock, hence the name of the instrument, which sometimes removed a piece of jawbone with the tooth...

Charrière, a major 19th-century Parisian manufacturer, was a pioneer in the design of high-precision surgical and anatomical instruments.
