Antique nickel-plated metal coffin handle
Egyptomania period - Art Deco circa 1920-1930
Art Deco coffin handle circa 1920-1930, more specifically from the Egyptomania period after the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922.
The winged hourglass is stylised in the Egyptian style.
Original new handle, never fitted, old stock from a long-closed hardware store.
Manufactured by Manufacture de Ferronnerie Quincaillerie Camion Frères. Iron and copper foundry. Founded in 1820 in the Ardennes and closed in 1979.
Model reference N°20 21c inscribed on the inside with the anchor logo of the Manufacture CF (Camion Frères).
With a winged hourglass motif.
The hourglass evokes the inexorable passage of time, with each grain of sand representing a day in our lives.
The hourglass is presented with the wings of a dove or angel, both messengers of God, as if the instrument used to measure time had become, with death, the soul that the dove or angel will carry to heaven.
By its reversible nature, the hourglass evokes the power of a new life or true life when turned over to restart a cycle.
Excellent condition, new from the period.
Would look great as a handle on a piece of furniture!
Size: 21x10.5cm Weight: 320g
An example from the manufacturer's hardware catalogue in the 1900s, where handles were sold among other hardware items such as shovels and buckets
