Length: Approx. 18 to 30 cm — Shorter quills are thicker and more rigid, while longer quills are finer and more flexible.
This authentic Cape Porcupine quill (Hystrix africaeaustralis) is a natural history specimen sought after for cabinets of curiosities, fine craftsmanship, or decoration. It features a striking natural pattern with alternating high-contrast black and cream bands.
Like human hair, porcupine quills follow a natural life cycle and fall out naturally during periodic shedding to be replaced by new ones.
The Cape Porcupine is the largest rodent in Southern Africa. Its armor consists of modified hair structures: highly keratinized hairs that have evolved into protective quills.
Contrary to popular belief, porcupines cannot shoot or project their quills at a distance. The quills are loosely anchored in the animal's skin. During an attack, they detach instantly upon contact to lodge themselves into a predator's flesh, where they can cause severe skin infections or sepsis.
Warning: One end forms an extremely sharp and piercing natural point. Handle with care.
The photographs are shown as examples; variations may occur as each quill is unique.
