Here it is only the skeleton of the fish, which has a chest-like shape, hence the term exoskeleton. Unlike the majority of fish whose scales are independent, boxfish have dermal plates welded together to form a rigid shell that envelops the entire body except for the mouth, fins and caudal peduncle.
The surface of the shell has a very clear alveolar network, forming these characteristic geometric honeycomb patterns visible on the flanks.
In boxfish, the shell grows at the same time as the fish by adding bone material to the sutures of the hexagonal plates, without ever molting.
The Longhorn cowfish Lactoria cornuta has a bovine appearance with outcrops effectively reminiscent of horns.
The species is present in much of the Indo-Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea
