The engravings are very beautiful.

The extensive chapter on the right whale (from page 317 to page 378) is very interesting. It tells the story of the industry built around this whale, which was already hunted down and endangered in the 18th and early 19th centuries, in particular because of its oil, which was used in large quantities for many purposes, from lighting and heating to painting. You have to imagine that, apart from whale oil, there are few other alternatives.

Lacépède even predicted its rapid disappearance if the whaling industry continued as it was, and his conclusion to this chapter is unvarnished: "Nature is immortal only as a whole; and if the art of man embellishes and revives some of its works, how many others it degrades, mutilates and annihilates!"

The whaling industry declined from the 1850s onwards with the discovery and mass production of paraffin and the more widespread use of gas in street lamps.
