Pyrops intricata - Fulgoroidea. Fulgoroids

Fulgoroidea, called fulgoroids are large, spectacular and colourful insects forming a large family of hemiptera insects (Hemiptera is an order of insects whose first of two pairs of wings is transformed into hemieleytra. It includes cicadas, aphids, bedbugs, etc.)

This insect family is particularly abundant and diverse in tropical regions and contains more than 125 genera worldwide.

These are mainly biting-sucking insects that feed on sap.

With their extravagant or colorful shapes, they are adorned with a thousand legends. They owe their name to the mistaken belief that the growth of their heads could emit light, but contrary to what their vernacular name implies, they cannot emit light.

Indeed, the Swedish naturalist Linnaeus, who described many species, relied on the statements of another naturalist who described them as light emitters. Linnaeus adopted the description without having seen it but these insects do not emit light!
