Entomological box
Species: Harlequin beetle - Acrocinus longimanus - longhorned beetle - Male and Female
The box is made entirely by hand by a handcraft bookbinder in Anjou.
The harlequin beetle feeds on sap and is given this name because of its elaborate pattern of black, red and greenish yellow markings on the wing covers of both sexes.
In this species the male’s front legs are larger than his body hence his longimanus name which literally means large hand.
This long-horned beetle is a large, very common beetle in Guyana, where it comes from, but it can live all over South America.
His disproportionate pair of front legs is used to firmly grip his support during mating with the female.
Its mandibles are powerful, so it is not better to handle them without caution because they are used to puncture or cut branches ...
Longhorn beetles are insects whose wings are covered with a pair of wings that have hardened to form elytra. The other pair of wings, which serves for flight, is thus protected. But what really sets them apart is that they all have very large antennas that look like long horns.
