Spectacled caiman - Wet specimen in fluid - Caiman crocodilus
This specimen is a young spectacled caiman still displaying what I believe to be its external yolk sac, visible under the ventral part.
The yolk sac, a normal structure in embryos, contains the nutritional reserves necessary for development before and immediately after hatching.
In this case, the animal died shortly before or just after birth, before the sac was completely reabsorbed as it should have been.
This is therefore not a malformation or deformity, but an interrupted embryonic stage.
A beautiful and rare specimen for biological study and collection, illustrating early development in crocodilians.
The spectacled caiman lives in South and Central America.
The bottle in which it is contained measures approximately 17.5 cm high and 8 cm in diameter.
The glass stopper is blocked and sealed with a silicone gasket.
The vial contains no formalin, as specimen fixation is carried out prior to preparation. Contains isopropanol. Does not move over time. A few crystals of thymol have also been added to the preparation to combat mold.
The specimens are not killed for this purpose but come either from deaths on farms or from vets
