Description

Uropygids - whip scorpion under a glass globe

Species: Uropygids - whip scorpion spp

Uropygids - whip scorpion belong to the arachnid order. They are also known as vinegar eels or vinegar fish in French, in reference to the liquid they eject when threatened.

They live in tropical humid environments around the world, except in Europe and Australia.

The Uropygids - whip scorpion is an animal that looks like a scorpion but does not have a venom gland. Its distinctive feature is a multi-jointed flagellum at the end of its abdomen, covered with numerous hairs that are sensitive to any movement of air.

Although it does not have a venom gland like a scorpion, it does have a pair of defensive anal glands located at the base of the flagellum on either side of the anus, which propel a repellent liquid.
