An ex-voto (from the Latin ex voto suscepto, "according to the vow made") is an offering offered to a deity or a saint in gratitude for a grace received or in request of protection. This offering can take many forms.
In Italy, and particularly in Tuscany where this ex-voto comes from, these votive hearts traditionally dressed the walls of shrines (cante ex-voto).

This very beautiful Marian ex-voto in brass and pressed and openwork metal comes from Tuscany, Italy.
Dating from the second half of the 19th century, this popular piece of sacred art stands out for its generous dimensions and the richness of its chiseled decor.
In the center of a domed heart with mirror polishing stands out the Marian monogram "AM" (Ave Maria or Auspice Maria), topped by a royal brass crown.
The whole is crowned by the flames of the Sacred Heart and framed by a lace openwork foliage where three angel figures are nestled: two lateral cherubs and a winged putto head.
What is a Marian ex-voto?
Derived from the Latin ex voto suscepto ("according to the vow made"), the ex-voto is an object of devotion offered to the Virgin Mary or a saint in gratitude for a grace obtained, a healing or a protection granted.
In Italy, and particularly in Tuscany, these votive hearts traditionally adorned the walls of shrines (cante ex-voto). They are still found today suspended in accumulation above the altars, in the side chapels or framing the statues and miraculous paintings. You can see in the last photo an example of an ex-voto wall above an altar in a cathedral in Tuscany.
