Theater of the Dance of Death
A miniature Gothic theater inspired by the dance of death and Victorian cabinets of curiosities.
Entirely handmade in Compiègne, France, using mixed techniques (printing, cutting, assembly).
First, the sets are hand-painted and then reproduced by printing on MDF elements.
The Théâtre de la Danse Macabre is inspired by Victorian paper theaters, entertainment objects that enlivened European salons in the 19th century. Here, the universe is revisited through the prism of romantic Gothic, memento mori, and cabinets of curiosities.
The richly decorated sets, scarlet curtains, and skeletal figures dressed in red evoke the tradition of the danse macabre, or dance of death, an artistic motif from the late Middle Ages reminding us of the fragility of human life.
The danse macabre is a sarabande that mixes the dead and the living, highlighting the vanity of social distinctions that fate mocks.
Fate reaps the rich pope as well as the poor priest, the emperor as well as the mercenary soldier. It is a moral lesson addressed to the living to reflect on our condition, comforting the poorest and teaching the greatest that no one is above the law.
Made in France, this collectible paper theater is carefully cut and printed before being assembled by hand. It can be displayed in a collector's showcase, incorporated into a cabinet of curiosities, or used as a Gothic-inspired decorative object in a library.
The characters and interior decorations are movable, so you can change the layout.
