Horseshoe crab on base (Large size): Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda - Philippines

Horseshoe crab on base (Large size): Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda from Philippines.

These are marine arthropods resembling horseshoe-shaped crabs, hence the nickname of “horseshoe crab” but although it may look like a crab, it is not a crustacean but a honeycomb, such as spiders and scorpions.

It is a species that has evolved over the last 150 million years, hence its reputation as a living fossil.

It lives at the bottom of shallow water (5 to 10 metres) and feeds on small marine animals such as fish or crustaceans which it grinds with the base of its front legs, its mouth being devoid of teeth.
