Ammonite fossil - France

Mesozoic period -251 to -65 million years

Description

Ammonite fossil from France

Ammonites are an extinct subclass of cephalopod mollusks, marine animals, like nautilus, octopus or argonauts today.

They were characterized by a more or less rolled univalve shell of which only the last compartment was occupied by the animal, the other compartments being used to control its buoyancy.

Their name comes from their spiral appearance: ammonis cornua, which means "horns of Ammon". The term was coined by Pliny the Elder in 79 A.D., because of the way the ammonite coil resembled the Egyptian god Ammon, often depicted with ram's horns.

Ammonites are still partly caught in the rock gangue, I like this rough side, taken out of excavations.

Age: Mesozoic period -251 to -65 million years

Provenance : France

Diameter of the ammonite, about 13cm - Weight: 1.2Kg
