Hourglass chromed metal and black wood - 30 minutes
Hourglass of 30 minutes
In navigation, the function of these 30-minute hourglasses, before the introduction of stopwatches, was to calculate the longitude on a boat. The latitude was given by a sextant, but the longitude was calculated with time, hence the obligation of precision of these hourglasses.
Indeed, on them depended the exact position of the ship and thus its safety, the reefs and sandbanks being also determined by latitude and longitude... They avoided many shipwrecks when they were well calibrated.
During the Renaissance, hourglasses are very present in the paintings called Vanities to represent the passing of time without any possible catch.
