Eau regale (Aqua regia) was the acid that enabled alchemists to dissolve glass and especially gold, the object of the alchemist's quest for desire!  As it is this acid that dissolves noble materials such as gold, tantalum and platinum, it was named Aqua Regia: Royal Water or Regal Water.
